The holidays are one of the best times of the year for people to connect. Families are eager to share their favorite memories on holiday cards, and as their photographer, you have the perfect opportunity to offer them custom holiday cards to boost end-of-year sales. You provide your customer with a beautiful design with excellent service, plus showcase your photography with their loved ones, who could be your next client!

Whether you want quick and easy drag-and-drop options or prefer uploading your creative custom designs, we offer both options! McKenna’s Holiday Card collection has everything you need to make your clients’ cards unforgettable. Choose from designs that say “Merry Christmas,” “Happy Holidays,” “Happy Hanukkah,” and more.

McKenna Tip: Don’t forget to download our 2025 Holiday Card Brochure PDF to see all of the new designs. It’s a great resource for marketing your cards and showing clients all the design options available this year.

Simple Holiday Card Ordering for Photographers

Our drag-and-drop templates make it easy to create and order cards through McKenna Web or Easy Order:

  1.  Upload your client’s images.
  2.  Choose your favorite template.
  3.  Drag photos into the image nodes.
  4.  Update the text with names or greetings.
  5.  Add to your cart and submit your order.
McKenna Tip: The more text you add to a text node on the drag-and-drop templates, the smaller the text will automatically size.

McKenna has a variety of Hanukkah card templates for you to choose from.

Let Your Creativity Flow on Holiday Card Designs

If you’d like to tweak our designs to fit your brand or your client’s style, we have the downloadable PSD templates available. You can easily change colors, fonts, and text sizes or add extra photo nodes to make it your own.

And if you’re designing from scratch, our Base Template PSDs include:

    • Correct bleed setup (⅛” on each side)
    • Safe line guides to keep text and elements properly within the printing space
    • Trim references
McKenna Tip: Always keep key details of your images and text inside the safe area for the best results.

What to Include in a Custom Holiday Card Design

If you’re designing your clients’ custom holiday card, include these important elements:

    • Family name
    • Year
    • Personalized greeting or short message
    • Favorite image(s) from their session
    • Studio logo or website (a subtle way to market your business and encourage referrals)
McKenna Tip: Do you want to pluralize the last name for the holiday card? Avoid the apostrophe, as this indicates possession. Add an “s” to most names (e.g., The Masons or The Hudsons). For names ending in -s, -z, -sh, -ch, or -x, add “-es” (e.g., The Searfosses).

McKenna features several "Merry Christmas" and "Happy Holidays" designs in their card templates.

Happy Designing (and Happy Holidays!)

Once your design is complete, save your JPGs, choose your preferred McKenna paper and finish, and submit your order. Most orders ship within 1–2 business days, so you can keep the holiday momentum rolling.

BONUS TIPS: 3 Ways for Photographers to Market Holiday Cards to Clients

Here are some tried-and-true ways other photographers upsell more holiday cards this season:

  1. Bundle Holiday Sessions to Include a Set of Holiday Cards

Create a “Holiday Collection” that includes a portrait session and 25 printed cards. You can even offer a print and digital combo. Give your clients a shareable web version of their card for social media with your logo, and encourage happy clients to tag your studio.

  2. Highlight the Benefit of Personalization Options

Every family wants their card to feel one-of-a-kind. Showcase some of your past designs and point out how they can customize fonts, colors, and greetings. Remind them that these cards are far more personal than store-bought ones and often kept long after the holiday is over.

  3. Start Marketing Early

The earlier you promote your holiday sessions and offerings, the better. Run an early-bird campaign or send out your own holiday card sample to clients. Share sneak peeks of this year’s designs on social media, and remind clients from spring or summer sessions that their images are perfect too for holiday cards.

The Art of Photo Color Correction

Effective color correction enhances the overall quality in professional photography. Sometimes colors can appear washed out, oversaturated, or simply inaccurate due to various factors such as lighting, camera settings, or the environment. Proper color correction not only improves the aesthetic appeal of images but also ensures that they convey the right mood and message that the photographer intended.

What Are the Benefits of the Color Correction Services at McKenna?

Achieving accurate skin tone in portraiture is one of the most essential aspects of McKenna’s color correction.

Properly rendered skin tones and harmonious color palettes enhance the viewer’s connection to the photograph, conveying warmth, authenticity, and a sense of personality. Capturing the subtle undertones in skin is crucial, and our color correction specialists pay close attention to these nuances. By adjusting the brightness and contrast, along with the red, green, and blue channels, we ensure that skin tones appear natural and vibrant, eliminating any unwanted color casts.

Our Process

Our highly trained color correction specialists carefully adjust each image, paying particular attention to skin tones in order to achieve the best color, density, and contrast while adhering to our professional standards. The process includes:

    • Basic Density Adjustments: Correcting the overall exposure to ensure that images are neither too dark nor too light.
    • White Balance Correction: Adjusting the colors to remove any unwanted tints, ensuring that whites appear as true whites, and other colors are accurately represented.

By evaluating each image individually, we help achieve a cohesive and polished look across your entire set of images.

Pricing and Availability

McKenna’s color correction service is available on every image and is charged on a per-order basis. This allows color correction to be applied to all photos in the entire order with a single click, ensuring a consistent look across all your photos. Whether you have a small handful of images or hundreds, you can find our current pricing for color correction here.

Does McKenna Offer Retouching?

Yes! In certain situations, consider adjustments that go beyond color correction. For instance, a portrait featuring multiple people may need more specific color correction or photo editing for each individual; McKenna’s photo retouching professionals can assist with this. Our Photoshop experts can enhance and resolve almost any image issue within two to four business days. Whether you need standard blemish removal or a complete photo makeover, we’ve got you covered. Next month’s blog will discuss our digital editing services and how to order them.

Master Color Correction for Your Images

Many photographers prefer to handle their own color correction as it’s a valuable part of the creative process. By taking control of in-camera color balance, you ensure that every detail reflects your artistry exactly as you intended. Learning to fine-tune tones and maintain consistency across sessions strengthens your color accuracy.

If you are interested in improving your color accuracy and calibration, McKenna has several resources for you. To get started, refer to the article, “The Importance of Color Calibration for Photographers”, and the “Step-by-Step Monitor Calibration” video. Graduation season is one of the busiest times of the year for the parents of seniors. They soak up the moments of the last of the sporting events, the hustle and bustle of prom, and plan to celebrate the graduation ceremony of their graduate with an open house. How will they share the details of their grad party? Word of mouth and with grad cards of course!

In our last blog, Top Tips for Offering Grad Cards, Maureen Miller, CPP, shared ideas on how to incorporate offering grad cards into your senior packages. By offering grad cards, whether as an incentive or as a package a la carte product, you get to monitor the quality control of the final product. When you print your cards at McKenna, you ensure your work is printed on the highest quality papers showcasing great color and detail every time.

But, what about the design? Designing senior grad cards shouldn’t feel like a chore. We have options to help you streamline your process so you can spend less time designing at your desk and more time out photographing! Whether you’re looking for quick and easy templates or prefer full creative control, here are a few tips to make designing your grad cards a breeze every season.

Keep It Simple With Our Drag-and-Drop Templates

We offer several drag-and-drop grad card templates for you to choose from. We update these designs every spring to bring new and fresh looks to our offering lineup. Using these templates in Easy Order and McKenna Web is easy:

  1. Upload your images.
  2. Choose your template.
  3. Drag your images into the image nodes.
  4. Update the text nodes with your clients’ information.
  5. Add to the cart and submit your order.

McKenna Tip: When using the templates in Easy Order and McKenna Web, the more you type in the text nodes, the smaller your text will be.

I Love Your Templates, but I Need A Little More Customization!

We make the customization of our grad card templates easier by offering downloadable Photoshop files of the designs. You can find our past and current PSDs, as well as the Grad Card Marketing Brochure PDFs, from our Downloads page. These PSDs give you a springboard for your creativity with the ability to change colors, fonts, sizes, add more image nodes, etc.

PSD Base Templates include the print bleed as well as the safe zone for design elements.

I Have A Senior Grad Card Design In Mind. Where Do I Start?

Ensure your one-of-a-kind grad card design is set up correctly by downloading our Base Template PSD’s before you start designing. Why do we recommend doing this? These PSD files include the bleed that is needed for printing which is 1/8” on each side of the cards. (For example: a 5×7 printed card needs a 5.25 x 7.25 file size.) We also include a safe line as a reference of where to keep all of your important text and design elements for printing.

McKenna Tip: Keeping your text and design elements within the safe area of the design, and not right up against the line, is important as all cards are stack cut during the finishing process.

Sample of a grad card with information to include on each design.

What Details Should Be On My Grad Card Design?

The most common details included on a grad card are the graduate’s name, graduation year, and the date, time, and location of the party. Other details may include:

  • Name of the high school they are graduating from
  • Commencement ceremony details
  • Honors or achievements
  • Favorite quote or motivational message
  • Future plans such as where they are attending a trade school or college, their field of study, joining the military or the workforce, etc.
  • Other details of the party such as menu, gifts, registries, etc.

Need More Inspiration?

There are thousands of graduation templates out there to spark your creativity and match your seniors’ unique style. Google and Pinterest are great resources for looking for the current grad card trends. You can find additional pre-templates and design elements for purchase through Adobe Stock, Etsy, Canva, and Creative Market.

Three popular design trends for graduation announcements that we see photographers using  include:

  • A minimalist aesthetic with clean lines, white space, and focus on the imagery.
  • Bold typography for the grad’s name and mixing script fonts for the header text with serif or san serif fonts for the detailed copy.
  • Geometric shapes used as the image nodes or in a pattern within the design.

Happy Designing!

Once your design is complete, save your JPG files, select your favorite McKenna paper type and finish, and place your McKenna card order. The 2025 graduation season will be here and over before you know it, so don’t delay placing your orders! Cards are printed and shipped within 1-2 business days of receiving your order.

Since color photography’s inception, photographers have been obsessed with color. Now that megapixels are here to stay as well as color profiles, why should photographers care about color calibration? After all, we’re creative, not technical, right?

Why Should I Calibrate My Monitor?

Whether you shoot stills or motion, a calibrated workflow producing precise, predictable, and repeatable results is important for your photography business. Your clients will thank you because you won’t be selling images that are unintentionally oversaturated or too dark. With a calibrated monitor your edited and printed images will look their best. Who doesn’t want that?

Can McKenna Help Me Calibrate My Monitor?

If you are new to digital photography, you might’ve Googled, “best monitors for photography”, “color calibration software and hardware”, or you may have watched our “Monitor Calibration with McKenna” videos on YouTube.

Color management is important, so we are happy to answer questions when it comes to calibrating your monitor. For in-depth questions or a complete walkthrough on monitor calibration, we recommend signing up for a free one-on-one virtual coaching session with Eric to assist you with your color accuracy and monitor calibration.

Getting Started With Monitor Calibration

What Color Calibration Tool Should I Buy?

There are many calibration software options on the market for you to choose from. At McKenna, we believe that calibrating a monitor can be a straightforward task, and this is why we recommend color calibration powered by X-Rite. Calibrite has partnered with X-Rite for all of their photo and video products. The Calibrite Display SL will work for most monitors. Calibrite offers other devices that might fit your needs as well.

Once you have purchased your color calibration tool and have your McKenna Calibration Prints, you will need to install the corresponding software. Follow the prompted instructions.

How Often Should I Calibrate My Monitor?

Calibration works similarly to how often you should change the oil in your car. An auto mechanic might tell you to change your oil every 3,000 miles. If you drive 3,000 miles on average every month, you might need to change your oil every 30 days. The more hours you log on your monitor, the more often you will have to calibrate it. At McKenna, we recommend calibrating monthly to keep your display from shifting too much.

Photographer-With-Laptop-And-Camera

Can I Calibrate My Laptop?

Laptops are great for quick edits or culling photos, but not always optimal for color accuracy or density matching. Traditionally, external monitors are considered superior to laptops screens because laptops cannot be calibrated as well as external monitors can. That being said, laptops should still be calibrated. We recommend that you do the majority of color correcting, editing, and final viewing of images on a calibrated external monitor before submitting them for print.

Understanding Color Profiles And Color Spaces

What Are Color Profiles And Color Spaces?

Color profiles, and color spaces are used synonymously. This numerical data tells specific devices (cameras, monitors, printers, and projectors) and software (Lightroom and Photoshop) how to display the specific colors in your photos.

McKenna recommends using the color profile sRGB because we print in sRGB. Although offering a smaller color gamut, sRGB is quickly becoming the standard color profile. In fact, most consumer monitors, email clients, web browsers, and social media platforms use the sRGB color profile.

Therefore, if your photo editing workflow is streamlined from camera to print in sRGB, you will experience less color shifts and more color accuracy.

McKenna also recommends creating a monitor profile for your screen. This is done through the monitor calibration process. Remember, the image color profile, and the monitor profile are different profiles.

For more on color profiles and color paces, please check out our webinar: “How Accurate is Your Color”.

Color Profiles

How To Set Up A sRGB Color Profile

Image color profiles (aka color spaces) are embedded into your images initially from the camera. Start by setting your camera’s color space to sRGB, and then set up your Photoshop’s color settings to sRGB (see examples below). If your images were not initially set to sRGB, you can convert the color profile to sRGB by simply going to the edit menu in Photoshop and clicking on “convert to profile”.

How To Set Up A Monitor Profile

Monitor profiles are saved at the end of the monitor calibration process. Once the monitor profile has been saved, you can check your monitor system preferences to confirm that my computer has loaded the correct monitor profile. To do this, open the monitor system preferences and search for the specific name of how you saved it. Personally, I name my monitor profiles with the year, month, day and right or left monitor (2024_8_13_RIGHT_MONITOR.icm).
